As educators, we understand that learning extends beyond grades; it's about reflection, ownership, and growth. To promote these characteristics, you can use an adaptable self-assessment template that can be modified for any content area or unit. It shifts the focus from "What grade did I get?" to "What can I prove I know and how did I learn it?" The strength of this template lies in its simplicity and focus on evidence. It revolves around three key components for every assessed skill:

Skill Focus
Each section begins with a clear statement of the skill or competency being assessed (e.g., Analyzing Primary Sources, Executing Multi-Step Algorithms, Applying Principles of Design). This can be customized for any unit.Mastery Level
Students are asked to evaluate their performance using clear, consistent language. The template provides four distinct levels, which can be tailored to your needs:- Excels at Grade Level Expectation
- Meets Grade Level Expectation
- Approaching Grade Level Expectation
- Needs Support to Reach Grade Level Expectation
Explanation with Evidence
This is the most vital part. Students must go beyond simply ticking a box. They are required to:- Identify specific work samples that demonstrate their chosen mastery level.
- Provide a link to that work (e.g., a document, a project file, or a recording).
- Explain how the selected work samples validate their self-assessment. This metacognitive exercise is where the deepest learning occurs.
- Promotes Student Ownership: By asking students to evaluate and justify their learning, we give them control over their education. They become active participants, not passive recipients.
- Flexible and Universal: This template can be used in any content area, from an English class to assess "Embedding Evidence" to a Science class to evaluate "Designing Controlled Experiments."
- Drives Meaningful Conversations: When students attend a conference with an instructor, they are already prepared with their evidence and justification. This transforms feedback from a lecture into a targeted, professional discussion about their specific growth areas.
